LITTLE CATS MAKE GOOD SHOWING IN WALLACE STATE INVITATIONAL

The Guntersville Wildcats continue to improve offensively, and some young Cats continue to step up and make a difference.  In four games (75 minute time limit games) at Heritage Park in Cullman this Easter weekend, the Cats amassed a total of 22 hits and 12 runs scored, and batted .444 with runners in scoring position.  A few untimely errors gave rise to 3 losses, but a complete effort against 4A rival Oneonta led to the lone win of the weekend.  In that game, the Cats accumulated 5 runs on 6 hits in 18 at bats (.333) and a .400 BA with runners in scoring position.

In the two losses on Friday, the Cats faced (Crawford), a rise ball pitcher from Pisgah.  The Pisgah hurler was solid in 7 innings of work, allowing only one Wildcat hit and the the Cats went down 4-0.  The Wildcat defense held the powerful Pisgah offense under their season scoring average.  The game was tied at 0 for three innings when the visiting team scored 1 run in the fourth, 1 run in the fifth, and two more in the 7th.  In the second game, a couple of Wildcat errors led to 3 unearned Cullman runs and the Cats fell 5-3.

With a third place finish in a very tough pool, the Wildcats faced Southside of Gadsden in the first game of tournament play on Saturday afternoon. Guntersville struck first in the first inning when 7th grade shortstop Kaitlyn Bannister singled up the middle to score Audrey Thomas and Rachel Mason.  Southside answered with two in their half of the first to tie the game at 2.  Guntersville regained the lead in the third when Beverly McDonald doubled to score Audrey Thomas all the way from first base.  Southside put up two runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead 4-3.  The Wildcats were able to tie the game in the fourth, but the Panthers added a fifth and final run in the bottom of the 4th, just before time expired to take the 5-4 win.
