Mason Strikes Out 9, Cats Fall to North Jackson
Senior Wildcat pitcher Amanda Mason threw 7 innings of
great softball Tuesday evening in cold temperatures and occasional light rain
and snow mix, but it wasn't enough as North Jackson handed the Cats their 3rd
consecutive loss.
Mason gave up 4 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits with 9
strikeouts. Of 98 pitches thrown, at least 71 were strikes as the
strike zone seemed to be moving from inning to inning. North Jackson got
on the board first in the third inning when Rachel Stewart hit into a fielder's
choice, scoring Nicole Ashley from 3rd. Ashley reached on a single earlier
in the inning.
In the 6th, Ashton Gant doubled to left center with 2
outs. Katalia Robinson followed with a rip to right center to put North
Jackson on top 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 5th.
In the Guntersville half of the sixth, Chloe Whitaker led
off with an infield single and was moved around the bases by Courtney Redington
and Bev McDonald. Senior first baseman Jade Harden continues to pay off
for the Cats with runners in scoring position as she recognized a change-up in
mid-flight and sacrificed a beautiful bunt to score Whitaker who just beat the
tag. Meredith Moore reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for
Audrey Thomas who has been red hot with the bat. After a couple of rocket
foul balls, Thomas struck out swinging--the first Wildcat to strikeout in the
previous 18 batters. The Chiefs added two more runs in the top of the 7th
on a 2 out Wildcat error to finish off the Cats, 4-1. Guntersville falls
to 2-5 on the season with DAR coming to town Thursday. Game time is set
for 4:30.
